There is growing alarm in the U.S. over Chinese infiltration attempts targeting the nation’s power grids—one of the most sensitive components of national security. Beijing began pushing for entry into the U.S. energy market as early as the 2010s. Although their efforts to acquire ownership stakes in American power infrastructure were blocked by the U.S. government, they managed to install a Chinese-developed control system in the PJM Interconnection—a critical power grid serving Washington, D.C. What’s most troubling is the silence from the American side about this collaboration, while Chinese sources have openly celebrated the achievement. It raises serious questions about how deeply China has penetrated the backbone of America’s energy security.
