Xi Jinping came to power as the result of the political infighting between Jiang Zemin and Hu Jintao. When Xi got rid of the term limits for himself in 2018, some western critics called him a dictator. From Xi’s perspective, though, he was only getting rid of a restriction put on his predecessors. Xi Jinping folded them under Deng Xiaoping’s era because he sees them only as an extension of Deng’s legacy.
