China has built up its enormous foreign reserves through decades of trade surpluses and foreign investments. One expert said that China has hidden 3 trillion dollars in “shadow reserves” in its state banking system, beyond the official reserves of $3.1 trillion. But I don’t think the shadow reserves still have $3 trillion left.
